Bali Water Tank Project

In December 2019, Julia Parini from the Rotary Club of Seaford was holidaying in Bali, and decided she would like to meet some local Rotarians. Julia visited the Rotary Club of Bali Ubud Sunset, and is joined in this image by Kartika Dewi (left) and Brian Goldman (right). Our club supported a local project to teach ladies sewing skills, and donated some sewing machines.

We recently received a request to support a new project involving the provision of water tanks to remote communities in Seraya Barat, in a mountainous region in Bali's south east. Water resources in these mountains are very limited to a few natural springs. Some bore wells have been drilled, but this is a very expensive process for poor communities. Seraya Barat has 200 families divided into 8 groups, each with 25 families, which have to take turns to access the limited water supplies, only getting access every 25 days. The best solution was to take advantage of the rain during the wet season by installing water tanks. At only AU$175 each including installation, the Bali Ubud club reached out to our club for assistance. Our club decided to support the installation of 6 tanks.

Seaford Wetlands Cleanup

Once a month (usually the last Sunday morning), a group of volunteers spends an hour or so removing rubbish from the Seaford Wetlands and surrounding catchment area. These efforts are part of the Adopt a Spot Scheme, which sees volunteers cleaning up beaches and waterways all over the state.

All volunteers need to view the safety video below before their first visit to the site. Please bring sturdy fully enclosed shoes (gumboots if working near the water), gloves and a grab stick or long set of tongs.

For further information, or to confirm the date of the next cleanup, please call Denise on 0449 040 254.

Seaford Rotary Seaside Walk 2023

Thank you to our participants and stall holders for the 2023 Seaford Rotary Seaside Walk. Once we have details about the 2024 event, we will post them here.

The Seaford Rotary Seaside Walk (formerly the Onkaparinga Seaside Walk for Suicide Prevention) was first conducted by the Rotary Club of Seaford on World Suicide Prevention Day in 2017 raising $7,000 for suicide prevention initiatives. With the exception of 2020 when the event was cancelled due to COVID, it has been run every year since, raising in excess of $20,000 suicide prevention and mental health initiatives.

Proceeds from the inaugural event were used to fund a study by Dr. Angela Nicholas into Suicide Prevention through Australian Rotary Health. A presentation by Angela of her findings was given to the club in 2019, and the recording is available here. Proceeds from successive events have supported Mental Health First Aid training courses, GROW SA's program of in school mental health conversations and a local mental health resource website, in addition to more funding for mental health research by Australian Rotary Health.

Coolock House

Supporting Victims of Domestic Violence

The Rotary Club of Seaford is collecting donations of goods for Coolock House which is a homelessness service for young women and their children.
Many of the young families that they work with are homeless as a result of Family and Domestic Violence, but as they work with quite young women, their support extends beyond housing and safety to include learning parenting skills, independent living skills, etc., Coolock House is quite different to most DV services and often receives referrals from other DV services. They also work with young women and children who have become homeless for reasons other than Family and Domestic Violence.

Donations can be dropped in to Coles on Beach Road at Christies Beach or Harcourts Real Estate South Coast, or call Denise on 0449 040 254. Please refer to the "Wish List" below.

Seaford Meadows Railway Station Redevelopment

In 2018 our club formed a partnership with the rail corridor maintenance team at the SA Department for Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI) to redevelop a section of the Seaford Meadows Railway Station. Our members decided we wanted to build an attraction garden, specifically to attract native species of butterflies, but also bees, birds and bugs. Our club engaged Rotarian Michael Moore, one of Australia's most highly respected lepidopterists. Michael worked with DPTI landscapers to prepare a planting and landscaping plan.

Fast forward to 2020, the site had been landscaped, a beautiful wall mural had been painted on the lift well, and the planting was ready to proceed. Then the COVID-19 pandemic hit, and everything was put on hold. Fortunately here in South Australia, we were able to start winding back restriction and a team of volunteers were able to complete our first planting day.

Mini Library in The Giving Garden

In 2018 a request came from the Aldinga Beach Children's Centre for a mini library to be installed in The Giving Garden, which is situated in a reserve adjacent to the Children's Centre and Aldinga Beach B-7 School. As a founding co-operating partner of the Giving Garden project, the Rotary Club of Seaford took ownership of this request.

The "Little Free Library" movement started in 2009 in Hudson, Wisconsin, USA, when Todd H. Bol designed and built the inaugural Little Free Library, a model of a one-room schoolhouse, at his home. It is estimated there are now 60,000 mini libraries across the globe in over 80 countries.

The Rotary Mini Library follows the well established pattern of "take a book, return a book", and gives book donors peace of mind that their pre-loved books are being appreciated rather than gathering dust.

One of the great aspects of Rotary is that every member brings their unique talents to the club. Our mini library was constructed by our own Rotarian and handy man extraordinaire Ray Goodall (right) with materials generously donated by Bunnings Seaford.

The mini library was painted in Rotary colours; gold and blue, and installed in the garden in March 2019. The club agreed to have signage made for the mini library, which was installed at a working bee in the garden in June 2019. Pictured above is Kerry from the Aldinga Beach Children's centre giving the mini library a clean and restocking it with new books which were donated by Rotarians.

Basic Education and Literacy is one of Rotary International's six areas of focus.
